1. Don’t leave unopened food lying around. If animals smell food then they are most likely to come and check it out.
2. Don’t dump your scraps or leftovers around your campsite. Same concept applies. If they smell it, they will come.
3. If you are tent camping, don’t leave food inside your tent. Animals will find any way they can to get into spaces where food might be.
4. Wash any pots and pans and utensils that you use to cook with. Leaving them to dry with food can attract ants and mice.
5. Aromatic fabric softener has been known to repel animals. The smell is unappealing to them, so wash your bedding, tablecloths, towels, etc. in fabric softener before you come. You can even hang a sheet or blanket washed with fabric softener around your campsite.
6. It has been known that human urine can repel animals as well. If there are any men camping with you, have them pee around your campsite to put the odor out there. It’s the same logic as dogs peeing on trees to mark their territory.
7. Park rangers suggest hanging food in a sealed cooler or bag, high in a tree, away from your immediate campsite to keep bears away.
8. When you are not around your campsite, keep doors to your RV’s closed and tents zipped at all times. The less access animals have to your stuff, the better chance you have of them not getting in.
9. Take care of your trash! Properly disposing of your trash will keep the animals away. It’s common sense people.
10. Animal Repellant- There is all kinds of animal repellent on the market today. Snake repellent and bear repellent, as well as general animal repellent are available at all outdoor specialty stores. You can also order online from places like amazon and camping world.
The main thing to remember is animals won’t come to your campsite if you don’t give them a reason to. Just remember to pick up after yourself and keep things secured and put away and you won’t have to worry about dealing with them.
